Java for Android: Know the importance of Java in Android

6 / 11 Blog from Introduction to Java

I think most of the tech enthusiasts have explored various ways to create an Android application. This is not just because it’s straight forward and easy, but it’s complicated and challenging. If you are beginning to work with Android, you’ve landed at the perfect place. This article on Java for Android will help you with understanding how Java works for Android.

I’ll be discussing the following topics:

Let’s begin!

What is Java Android?

Java is the oldest and the most popular programming language for Andriod Development. Java is also used by Google for large parts of the Android internals. There are two distinct parts to learn Java for writing an Android application. One is the Java programming language itself and the other is understanding how to create an application in terms of its UI, the Android OS, and the Android Software Development Kit (SDK).

How to get started?

To learn how to create an application, you need to be well-versed in any programming language. To start working, you need to have an IDE to perform actions. You can either work on IntelliJ or Android Studio. Once you are clear with this, you’ll have a lot of fun exploring this amazing technology.

What are the different Java concepts required?

There are a few concepts that you need to know in order to work with Android. Here we go!

How to write applications in Java?

Writing an application in Java, you need to know how to work your work around the IDEs and the programming language. To start off with,

  • You need to create a new project. An empty project is more preferred because you can add any of the layouts or designs of your choice.
  • Next, name your application. You can also select the programming language, there is Kotlin or Java.
  • Click on the dropdown corresponding to the project name and you’ll find MainActivity() class. This is the main class.
  • You can also add new classes to this field.
  • Check the resource field to get the layouts, drawable, values.
  • Layouts are used to view the design and also you can code your own layout. Drag and drop the components onto the workspace.
  • Once you do this, connect your code to a virtual device in order to run the application.

This is how you can work with Android Development.

Note: You can either code in Java or Kotlin for creating an application.

What is the future of Android Development using Java?

Talking about the future of Android Development, programming language plays a major role. And like I mentioned, Kotlin is also used for creating an Android application, this might overtake Java in the future. So, Kotlin is a new bloom in the field of Android and this is definitely the future of application development. Java is also going to be used along with Kotlin, but Kotlin has a lot of advantages over Java, so it is obvious that Kotlin might replace Java in the near future.
